Coronary angiography
A coronary angiogram is a picture of the blood vessels supplying your heart obtained by injecting contrast (a type of dye) into the heart arteries that shows up on X-ray images.
The pictures are taken with the patient lying on a flat table in a room called the catheterisation laboratory or “Cath Lab”. Pictures from multiple angles are taken. Based on these pictures, your cardiologist will be able to determine if blockages are present in your heart arteries.
Pacemaker
A pacemaker is a device that is implanted in the body, that sends electrical signals to the heart, telling it to pump. The pacemaker comprises a battery (the generator), and leads that connect the generator to the heart muscle.
Electrophysiological Study and Catheter Ablation
An Electrophysiological (EP) Study is a detailed study of the electrical system of the heart using catheters and wires that are advanced to the heart.
Catheter ablation delivers energy to the tip of the catheter to cause a specific area of heart muscle to become electrically inactive. It is a form of treatment for heart rhythm abnormalities.
Implantable cardioverter defibrillator
An implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) is a device that is implanted in the body, which can detect a dangerous heart rhythm and potentially deliver an electric shock to reset the heart rhythm.
